But at age seventeen, I’d gone to a church where they had a lot of emotions and they spoke in tongues and beat their drums and stomped their feet. One time, the preacher there had given an invitation, and I was willing to get up and go forward and ask God into my heart.

But a sweet spirit came by and said to me, "Wade, this is not what you are looking for."

Sometime between my junior and senior years, I went to a revival in Columbia and listened to a man named Arthur Roney preach. He was a Free Methodist evangelist, and he presented the gospel in such a way I recognized it.

That sweet spirit came by and said, "Wade, this is what you are looking for."

Because of my previous experience, I thought I had to struggle and pray loud and long. The conversation in my head was between the sweet spirit and another voice.

"This is indeed what you are looking for."

"You’ll have to quit the picture shows, the skating, the swimming, and you’ll never have any fun."

"But this is what you want."
